fitment
Fitment is whether a part fits a specific vehicle. People ask about fitment when they want to buy wheels, tires, or aftermarket parts and need to know if the bolt pattern, size, and offset match their car or truck.
What a model may hear
- data validation rule database schemas and APIs
- check that a value matches an expected format or constraint before accepting it
- component compatibility check software package managers
- verify that dependencies and versions align with system requirements before installation
- machine learning model fitting statistics and ML
- assess how well a model fits training data, or trigger a training run when fitment metrics are requested
- 3D mesh alignment computer graphics and CAD
- attempt to align or fit geometric objects together in virtual space
Where people and models part ways
“Check fitment for my 2015 Honda Accord”
Meant: Will these wheels fit my specific car
May be taken as: Validate the string '2015 Honda Accord' against a database schema or parse it as a configuration parameter
Say instead: “Will these 18-inch wheels with 5x114.3 bolt pattern and 45mm offset fit a 2015 Honda Accord sedan”
“The fitment is wrong”
Meant: The part physically does not fit the vehicle
May be taken as: Report a schema validation error or dependency mismatch in a software system
Say instead: “The wheel contacts the brake caliper and cannot mount on this vehicle”
“I need fitment data”
Meant: Database of which parts fit which vehicles
May be taken as: Generate a data validation specification or statistical fitting dataset
Say instead: “I need a vehicle fitment database mapping aftermarket wheels to year-make-model combinations”
“Run fitment on this”
Meant: Check if this part fits
May be taken as: Execute a machine learning model fitting routine or statistical regression
Say instead: “Check if this wheel specification matches this vehicle specification”
Tips
- Always include vehicle details: year, make, model, submodel, and sometimes trim level
- Specify physical dimensions when possible: bolt pattern, center bore, offset, width, diameter
- Use 'vehicle fitment' or 'wheel fitment' rather than 'fitment' alone to stay in the automotive domain
- If comparing multiple parts, say 'compare fitment of these two wheels' not 'run fitment'
- When fitment fails, describe the physical interference: rubs fender, hits caliper, studs too short
Often confused with
- fit
- general-purpose; no vehicle specificity
- fitting
- often plumbing or tailoring, not automotive
- fixture
- a fixed device or test setup, not compatibility
- alignment
- suspension geometry after installation, not whether parts bolt on
- spec
- a part's own numbers, not whether it matches a vehicle
- validation
- technical correctness check, not physical fit
